Getting ready for lift off..

It’s like the calm before the storm. On monday nominations close, we get a full membership list and we are allowed to campaign. Happy cheers from Team Williams at this news, we are positively champing at the bit to get going.

As literature drops on doors we’ll upload it on here - all members should get a mailing in the next few days with details of hustings locations and a leaflet from us.

I’d like to take this moment to thank Brains for their free wireless internet provision. Very useful when yours goes down at home.

A letter from America

Obama campaigning

Obama campaigning

A number of us involved in Kirsty’s campaign have links over to America and the Obama camp. We are, however, all insanely jealous of John Mundy who has been over there for a bit longer… figured we would share his good luck message..

Dear Kirsty,

One week to go in the most influential political campaign in history. We have offices in almost every town in America, we have hundreds of thousands of volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. Its been 20 months of our hard work to get Senator Obama here, but it will count for nothing if we can’t get out the vote on the 4th.

I’m running a small campaign office out of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, an old coal mining town 2 hours west of Philadelphia. The surrounding hills, Welsh ancestral names and hard working people very much remind me of home. Unemployment is high and this region is finding it tough to reinvent itself. Luzerne county voted 3 to 1 for Hillary in the primaries so its been an uphill struggle to convince them of Obama’s talent. So we still have a lot of work to do to contact more voters than have ever been contacted by a political campaign.

Many fellow campaigners have commented on my accent. The most common question is “Don’t people find it off putting that a British person is working for Obama?”. I tell them that it makes my life easier. It gives me the chance to explain that a Barack Obama presidency will influence every nation in the world, it will revive America’s moral authority and it will inspire politicians of all nationalities to follow in his foot steps. He is the change we need globally, not just in America.

Even during our 24 hour schedule I have been checking on your progress in the leadership race for Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader. I will be 100% behind you as the candidate who, like Senator Obama, represents reform in every aspect of your life. I have seen the work you do and it is in inspiration to us all.

All the best for the coming weeks of your campaign. And as we say here, “Fired up! Ready to go!”

Kirsty Williams hits North Wales on the Nominations trail

Kirsty Williams, candidate for the Welsh Liberal Democrat Leadership, spent last week collecting nominations for the position in North Wales.  She collected nominations from Welsh Lib Dem members and Councillors in Ynys Mon, Conwy and Denbighshire.

Kirsty Williams said: “I am a candidate for the whole of Wales and I have proved this by gaining nominations from all parts of the country.

“We must move away from the Cardiff centric gloopy consensus and I believe I am the woman to make this happen.  All too many decision makers in the Assembly focus on the M4 corridor and rarely venture beyond.

I recognise that different parts of the country have different needs and I am the candidate to represent these many voices.

“As Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire I am experienced in fighting for the needs of those in rural areas.  Coupled with my experience as campaigner in the South Wales valleys I believe I am the candidate for the whole of Wales.”

Ynys Môn

Kirsty met up with supporters on the Menai Bridge.

Cllr Aled Morris Jones said: ““I’m supporting Kirsty because of her can-do attitude and her ability to connect not only to traditional supporters, but beyond to people who haven’t voted Liberal Democrat before.”

Denbighshire

Kirsty met up with Rhyl Town Council Lib Dem candidate Colum McCormack and campaigners.

Mark Young, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Vale of Clwyd, also joined Kirsty and commented:” Two years ago I thought what a great leader she would make, now I have the opportunity of backing Kirsty I am absolutely delighted.

“I believe she has got what it takes to take the Liberal Democrats to the next stage.  I believe she will be great for Wales and North Wales, a natural communicator and I am really hopeful that she will succeed and work both in North Wales and across the rest of the country.”

A busy weekend

It’s been a busy weekend here - the new site has been in beta testing. We are still refining it and have some more bells and whistles to add to it. If you have any suggestions on how to improve things please let us know.

Meanwhile Kirsty has been continuing to campaign hard, speaking to more and more of you. On saturday she spent some time at the Swansea and Gower Pool Tournament. Jenny was there too and there was a joint trophy presentation. Never let it be said we Welsh Liberal Democrats are not scrupulously fair. Congrats to Jonathan Clarke from Swansea and Gower local party.

Jonathan wins the pool tournament..

This week is the last chance to join the party to vote in the leadership election - you can join up here.

“I have proved myself as a hard worker and strong voice as AM for Brecon and Radnorshire and as Leader of the Welsh Lib Dems I would work doubly hard to prove myself to the whole of Wales.

Cllr Clair Powell said: ““I am supporting Kirsty for leader as she is a true inspiration to other women who wish to enter the world of politics.  She has the will and determination to take this party forward and be a strong voice for liberalism and democracy across Wales.”
